About

I always have trouble with this part. Talking about myself isn’t something that come naturally to me but here goes…

I have 4 wonderful children;

Deven (19) – Graduated in 2009

Samantha (18) – Will Graduate in 2010

Jacob (9) – In the 3 grade

Cyrena (2) – Preschool

I’ve been married to Douglas  for 18 years (who loves me no matter what, and boy have I tested that over the years). We were highschool sweethearts who have so far beat the statistics through a lot of sweat, tears and hard work.

We have been homeschooling for over 13 years. We started out very structured by quickly came to love doing unit studies. Having new-homeschool jitters and tons of family pressures, we would often revert back to the structured curriculum. I don’t know why I gave in so often when I knew each time shelling out the mega bucks for the expensive full packaged curriculum, that it wasn’t right for us. The best learning and most fun we had was when we did a literature unit study. They weren’t full-blown unit studies because I did have the school-like curriculum for LA, so we just read some really good books for one topic and had fun with some hands-on type projects.

Thank goodness I can now say that we have come along way from that lifestyle. I’d like to say that I’m more mature and no longer give in to the pressure but just last year I bought Jake an almost full curriculum from Rod & Staff. How much more school like can you get, good grief! He did enjoy the spelling workbook and we both love the Bible readers but otherwise it didn’t work for us. This year I didn’t fall for it though, I just didn’t tell anyone when I started planning for the 2010 school year, and guess what! I ordered exactly what I wanted. WhooHoo!

 So that just about sums up our homeschool journey and how I’m not one of those awesome mom’s who have it all laid out each year. The Moms who have a 12 year planner and know exactly what to buy and how it’s going to work yadda yadda yadda… Good for them!  It’s just not me though, I’m a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kinda gal, but wish I wasn’t. I wing it year after year. I still have time as my youngest is just two, so maybe one day I’ll figure out how those super Moms do it!
